Get the Infrared Heat Lamp the Professionals Use and Save $$ at the Doctor’s Office!

Dear Reader,

If you are experiencing chronic pain, or are recovering from an acute injury, I highly recommend you try using an infrared heat lamp.

Hi, my name is Dr. Dan Perez.  I am a retired Doctor of Chiropractic, having spent 25 years in practice.

During that time, I treated thousands of patients and probably over a hundred different types of pain presentations.  As you can imagine, I developed a good sense of what protocols worked best for a particular condition, such as low back pain.

I used and evaluated many types of therapeutic equipment on patients, young and old.   Most of them were “so-so:” you couldn’t tell if they were doing much benefit.

But then there were a couple of devices that I found to work exceptionally well.  They became my “go-to” therapy devices –the consistently reliable work horses of my therapy bay.  Basically, these select pieces of equipment helped ease the pain of thousands of patients.

One such device is the infrared heat lamp.

I have one at home that I use for a chronic shoulder that I developed (adjusting big people puts repetitive strain to a chiropractor’s shoulders), and it is really effective in alleviating flare ups.

The reason why infrared heat works better for pain than a hot pack or hot bath is that it is radiant heat.  Radiant heat is emitted as electromagnetic radiation in the far-infrared spectrum, and therefore has the ability to penetrate well beyond the surface of the skin.

This is important, because big joints like the hip and knee (their inner structures that usually get injured) are several inches underneath the skin.  This means that hot packs and jacuzzis are unable to deliver heat to these critical areas, since they rely on conductive heat, which only heats superficially.

Infrared heat, the form of heat that bounces off the earth back into space, is invisible to the human eye.

It travels through air without heating the air, penetrates the tissues and builds up thermal energy in the targeted areas, creating the physiological effects of heat where it is needed the most.

Infrared heat may even enhance or speed up cellular regeneration (protein synthesis and cell division) in the damaged cartilage, tendons and/or muscle.  Studies suggest that some wavelengths of red light have an ability to cause cells to produce more energy.

The good news is that infrared heat lamps, the exact, same ones physical therapists, chiropractors and acupuncturists use, are so safe that the FDA allows consumers to purchase them directly (no professional license required).

To use one, simply find a comfortable place to lie down.  If you have a portable massage table, that is ideal.  If not, your bed or the sofa will work (use pillows for comfort, as you will be lying down for 30+ minutes).

Position the treatment head 9″ from the area you want to treat.  Then, turn the spring-loaded timer clock-wise all the way to 60 minutes, then back to 45 minutes.   It takes about 10 minutes to reach maximum heat.  The unit will turn off when time runs out.

Here’s why I think it’s great to have an infrared lamp at home:

  • The deep-penetrating IR heat reaches all the way down to the joint surfaces, where it increases blood flow and soothes pain.
  • It is relatively inexpensive.  You may be able to reduce your visits to the therapist by owning your own lamp.
  • It is safe to use.  Just make sure to adjust the distance of the treatment head to your comfort level.
  • It can be combined with other procedures to maximize therapeutic effect:  use it right after a deep tissue massage; use it on your low back as you apply TENS therapy to it; or apply a topical pain relief agent to the area such as comfrey or arnica before you apply the IR heat.

The bottom line is that this thing worked great for thousands of my patients, and it should work great for you as well.
