What You Should Know About Chiropractic Before You See a Chiropractor for Back Pain

If you have low back pain and haven’t tried chiropractic, read this article.  In it, I provide information about chiropractic that can help you decide whether or not to try it.

Chiropractic is an established healthcare discipline utilized by an estimated 11% of the adult population.   It is “outside” the medical establishment in terms of organization of the profession, so chiropractors basically operate independent of traditional medicine in a private practice, out patient setting.  This is why you won’t find chiropractors in most major hospitals and medical clinics.

Many chiropractors practice a holistic version of healthcare that emphasizes natural healing over drugs; thus, it can be said that chiropractors offer an alternative to prescription drugs and injections; and sometimes spinal surgery.

A Diverse Profession

If you search online the word chiropractic you will get a mix of listings; some unusual.    There are mainstream chiropractors who limit their practice to musculoskeletal conditions– neck, back and extremity pain.  And there are holistic-oriented chiropractors who believe disease is largely due to nerve pressure coming from the spine and treat based on this belief (these are typically the chiropractors who are vehemently against vaccination).  There are even chiropractors who adjust only the first bone under the neck, and nothing else.  And, there are chiropractic detractors (usually skeptical M.D.s or dissatisfied patients) who claim it is unscientific and dangerous.

The bottom line is that chiropractic utilization all boils down to personal choice.  People who choose to use it will gravitate to the type of chiropractor they feel comfortable with.

Here is a summary of what I think are the major “pros and cons” of chiropractic.

PROS:

–Chiropractic may offer an alternative to harmful painkiller drugs for some people.

–It is safer than taking drugs, statistically.

–It has the potential to make your body more structurally balanced, which can have added benefits besides pain relief.

CONS:

— Since it relies on human skill for the most part, treatment can vary greatly between chiropractic offices.  Basically, there are some really good chiropractors (at adjusting the spine), and there are some not-so-good chiropractors.  The experience can be like night and day.

–It can be uncomfortable for some people, especially if the chiropractor is not very skilled.

–For some cases of deep chronic pain, it is not as fast acting as medications and surgery.

There are many research studies where it was determined that chiropractic is helpful for relieving lower back pain.  The reason being is that chiropractic adjustments help restore movement to vertebrae that are under compression causing pain.  This results in less pressure to pain sensitive areas, improved circulation and fluid exchange to discs and better range of motion.

If you want to try chiropractic, I recommend you get a couple of referrals from people you know who have seen/are seeing a chiropractor.  You can also check online review sites like “Yelp.com” and read the reviews.

Note that some chiropractors have a business model that involves selling multiple visit plans, pre-paid (as in 40-60 visits).  I personally do not agree to this.  So my advice is to find an established, reputable chiropractor who spends quality time with each patient (not necessarily a long time) and does not compel the patient to purchase a long-term, multiple visit care plan.  A good chiropractor will explain to the patient what is causing his/her symptoms and and what to expect from the adjustment (and make sure the patient understands before he/she proceeds).

So that’s it — know that chiropractic is generally safe and has been shown to be effective for common low back pain.  The key is to find a good chiropractor you can work with.
